Cushion with Sunburst-like Motif

(Crochet * Stash-buster)

I had left-over yarn from my “Study In Squares” blanket, so I thought of making a flowery cushion with the remaining yarn…

Me quedó lana sobrante de la frazadaque hice para mi estudio, así que pensé hacer un cojín floreado… 

I used the same colours as the blanket: grey, cream, fuscia, vintage pink, green, camel, beige; and for the background: brown.

Utilicé los mismos colores de la frazada: gris, crema, fucsia, rosado antiguo, verde, camello, beige, y todo el fondo en café.

Both sides of the cushion are made with the flower motifs.

Ambos lados del cojín los hice con el motif de las flores. 

I was inspired by the famous “Sunburst motif”, but made a few variations to the original pattern: (a) For the center, instead of using trebles, I made a row of 8 sc, and then a row of 16 Dc.  (b)  Instead of the 5-DC clusters, I made 3 Dc clusters, for the petals.  For those of you who like graphic patterns as much as I do, here it is...

Bloom Coasters (pattern)

As promised, here is the pattern for the “Bloom Coasters”…

Tal como lo prometí, aquí les dejo el patrón de los “Portavasos Florecientes”…  [Las instrucciones en español las encontrarán después de las de inglés]

MATERIALS

Cotton, in DK or light weight

Hook 3.5 mm

For border:

Fine cotton thread (#5 or 10)

Hook 2 or 2.5 mm

STITCHES

Ch                  Chain

Sc                   simple crochet

Dc                   double crochet (US)

2Dc tog          2 double crochet together

Sl st                Slip stitch

HOW TO:

Worked on the round…

For the main part of coaster (with DK or light weight cotton):

1. In a magic ring:  Ch3 (counts as first dc), 1dc, ch1. 

Repeat 5 times: *2dc, ch1* [Total: 6 clusters] .

2. Slip St until reaching the first space between clusters. 

Ch3 (counts as first dc), 1dc, ch2, 2dc. 

Repeat 5 times: *2dc, ch2, 2dc*

3. Slip St until reaching the first space between clusters. 

Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2dc, ch1.

Repeat 11 times: *3dc, ch1 (in space between clusters)*

4. Ch1, and sc in every st, all around.  Close with sl st. [Total: 12 clusters)

For the final border (with fine thread #5 or #10):

Start with 1sc in any st.  Repeat all around: *3ch, 2dc tog over the working sc, skip 1^st and make 1sc on 2^nd st*. Finish with a sl st on first sc. 

Weave in ends.

Trabajar en redondo…

Para la parte principal del portavasos (con algodón delgado):

1. Comenzar con un anillo mágico: 3cad (que cuentas como el primer Pa), 1Pa, 1cad.

Repetir 5 veces: *2Pa, 1cad*.

2. Seguir con punto superficial hasta llegar al espacio de 1cad.

3cad (cuenta como el primer Pa), 1Pa, 2cad, 2Pa.

Repetir 5 veces: *2Pa, 2Cad, 2Pa*

3.  Seguir con punto superficial hasta llegar al espacio de 2cad.

3cad (cuenta como el primer Pa), 2Pa, 1cad.

Repetir 11 veces: *3Pa, 1cad*

4.  1cad, y 1pb en cada puntada alrededor.  Cerrar con ps.

Para el borde final (con hilo fino):

Comenzar con 1pb (en cualquier p.).  Repetir la siguiente secuencia alrededor:

*3cad, 2Paj en el mismo pb, saltearse una p. y hacer 1pb en la segunda p.  Terminar con un ps en el primer pb.

Gift: Coasters

I have been playing with crochet coasters these past weeks, because I wanted to give a set to a dear friend. 

He estado haciendo pruebas de portavasos en ganchillo, porque quería regalarle un set a una amiga. 

I tried different patterns…but at the end I came up with my own version. 

Probé varios patrones, pero al final salí con una versión propia. 

I am calling it: “Bloom coasters”.  It is formed by clusters that look like petals, blooming to form a round motif.  It is a little lacy, but not too much.

Le di el nombre de “Portavasos Florecientes” a este patrón, porque está formado de grupitos de puntos altos que se asemejan a pétalos florecientes, que forman una aplicación redonda.   Es un poco calado, pero no demasiado. 

I made the whole set with cotton (DK weight) in natural color, and the border in fine cotton thread (#10), in earth tones: burnt orange, brown, beige, mustard, olive green. 

Utilicé un algodón natural delgado, y el borde lo hice de hilo fino (#10), en colores tierra: naranja oscuro, café, beige, mostaza, verde oliva. 

I am planning on making more of these…for gifts…and for my home (I want some too!).

Estoy planeando hacer más de estos…para regalos…y para mi casa (¡yo también quiero unos!). 

Next time I will be sharing here the pattern, in case any of you want to give them a try…

You will need:

Cotton yarn, fingerling weight (or double thread)

Crochet hook # 3 or 3.5 mm

Mini button
hair clip

Sewing needle or glue gun

Necesitarás lo siguiente:

Hilo de algodón delgado (o doble hilo)

Gancho # 3 ó 3.5 mm

Botón miniatura
Gancho para pelo

Aguja para coser a mano o goma fuerte

1.  Make a simple crochet flower with 5 petals, in the following way...  

Haz una flor simple con 5 pétalos, de la siguiente manera...  

a. In a magic ring, make 10 sc. Close row with a slip st on the first sc.

En un anillo mágico, hacer 10 puntos bajos (pb). Cerrar con un punto superficial en el primer pb.

b. Make the petals, repeating 5 times the following sequence: * 3 chains, in next sc make 3dc tog, then close the petal with 3ch and sl st in next sc.* (total: 5 petals)

Hacer los pétalos repetiendo 5 veces la siguiente secuencia: *3 cadenas, en el siguiente pb hacer 3 puntos altos juntos, luego cerrar el pétalo con 3 cad., y un punto superficial en el próximo pb* (total: 5 pétalos)  

c. Sew in the loose ends. (I suggest leaving a long tail, and use it to sew the button…)

Esconder los hilos sueltos (Les sugiero dejar una cola larga para usarla cuando se pegue el botón…)

2. Sew a mini-button in the center of the flower.

Coser un botón miniatura en el centro de la flor. 

3.  Sew or glue the flower to a hair clip. 

Coser o pegar con goma resistente la flor sobre un gancho de pelo. 

It’s that easy!

Most likely, all of you already know how to make this simple crochet hat in double crochet sts.  But in case you are new to the craft, here is an improvised graphic pattern:
