What could be better than granny squares to use the small pieces of yarn? Currently I am making two baby blankets, one for a girl and one for a boy.

¿Qué mejor proyecto para los restos que los cuadritos granny (de la abuelita)? Estoy haciendo una con colores de niña y otra versión más varonil.

Colorful Polka Dots

I have been a little quiet here in the blog, but I hope to pick it up this year. Let me start by showing you a lovely blanket my mom made: a colorful “polka-dot” blanket, made with hexagon motifs...

Quiero compartirles una linda manta de bebé que mi mamá hizo: una manta de lunares coloridos, hecha con aplicaciones hexagonales...

 

The motif starts with a circle (2 rows), and on the last row, it is turned into a hexagon…and joined as-you-go. The border was a little tricky, but she found a way to make it straight. 

La aplicación comienza con un círculo (en las dos primeras hileras), y en la última pasada se convierte en un hexágono, y se une también. El borde fue un reto, pero mi mamá logró que tomara forma rectangular. 

It is a super-cute blanket. Congrats, mom!

El resultado fue una manta bellísima. ¡Felicitaciones, mami!

Grey/White Blanket

I made this knit blanket for my newborn nephew…

Tejí esta mantita para mi sobrino que acaba de nacer…

It is a small blanket, designed to cover the baby while being carried on the stroller. It is made in wide stripes, alternating grey and white. I used this stitch (blocks of K10/P10) so that it would be reversible—it looks the same in the front and in the back.  All the border is made in seed st (k1,p1).

Es una manta pequeña, para que cubran al bebé cuando lo llevan en su carruaje. Está hecha con dos agujas, en franjas anchas de gris y blanco. Usé esta puntada (bloques de 10 der/10 rev) para que fuera reversible, siendo igual adelante y atrás. Todo el borde está hecho en punto musgo (1 der, 1 rev).

Baby Squares Blanket

I finished the baby blanket, and it is now delivered, warming up a newborn boy.

Ya está terminada la manta para bebé.  La entregué y ahora está calentando a un niño recién nacido.

The blanket is made with simple granny squares, with colors that remind me of the beach and ocean.  In total I made 30 colored squares, and joined them on the last row with white, using the “continuous join-as-you-go” method (check tutorial @ The Patchwork Heart: Joining SquaresMethod 3 Continuous).

La manta está hecha de simples cuadros de la abuelita (inglés: Granny Squares), en colores que recuerdan al mar.  En total hice 30 cuadros de color, y los uní en la última hilera con blanco, usando el método continuo (pueden ver una gráfica y fotos de cómo se unen, con instrucciones en inglés en el blog Patchwork Heart: Joining Squares Method 3 Continuous).

Manta de cuadros, en colores neutrales más rojo…

I started this blanket last year, and I finally finished it!  It is made with granny squares in neutral colors with a splash of red.  The squares were joined at the end using the sc-joining method.  For the border I used the mosaic stitch and granny stripes.  In all: 154 squares, and when extended it covers the surface of a queen-size bed.  The blanket is for my nephew, and he is happy to finally have it in his room.   

Comencé a tejer esta manta hace un año, y finalmente la terminé.  Está hecha con cuadros de la abuelitas (“granny squares”) en colores neutrales con un toque de rojo.  Los cuadros están unidos con punto bajo, alternado con una cadena.  Para el borde, utilicé el punto mosaico además del punto granny.  En total son 154 cuadros, y el tamaño llega a cubrir la superficie de una cama matrimonial.   La manta es para un sobrino, y él está feliz de tenerla ya en su dormitorio.

The stitch I used in a twist of the shell stitch (with a chain in the middle), which I am calling: “Fan shells” (Multiple of 6 + 1).

At first, I wanted to make a simple border, but it looked a bit plain.  So I decided to add something fun.  It was an experiment, but I think it worked.  I brought out the Fan Shell stitch of the blanket, and mixed it with other stitches in different colors. 

La puntada que usé es una modificación de las conchas (con una cadena en medio), y la bauticé como: “Concha Abanico” (múltiplo de 6 + 1).

Al principio pensé hacer un borde sencillo, pero me pareció demasiado aburrido; así que decidí hacer algo más divertido.  Fue un experimento, pero creo que funcionó.  Saqué la puntada de “concha abanico” en rosado, y la mezclé con otras puntadas en distintos colores.

My mom made this in crochet.  First, she made granny stripes.  Then she made the granny squares for the border. I think it looks adorable, don´t you think?

La tejió mi mamá en ganchillo.  Primero hizo hileras de punto de la abuelita.  Luego hizo el borde con cuadros de la abuelita.  Quedó preciosa, ¿no les parece?

Stripes for a Boy

I just finished a crochet blanket for a baby boy…

Acabo de terminar esta manta en ganchillo para niño…

It is made all in double crochet stitches.  The colors remind me of summer, for some reason.  The border is simple, but effective.  I love stripes!

Está hecha toda con puntos altos.  Los colores me hacen pensar en el verano, por alguna razón.  El borde es simple, pero es lo que complementa bien a una manta de rayas.

Patch mini-blanket

A friend recently had a baby boy, and she asked me to make a blanket on the small side…

Una amiga acaba de dar a luz a su bebé, y me pidió que le hiciera una manta pequeña…

It is a patch blanket made with 36 motifs, in the following colors: brown, light blue, green, beige, country blue, cream and beige. The motifs are made separately, joined later with a simple crochet st (alternating with a chain st).  For the border, I used the mosaic or block st. 

Here is the chart for the motif:

Es una manta de “parches”, hecha de 36 cuadritos, con los siguientes colores: café, beige, verde, celeste, azul, crema, beige.  Los motifs se hacen por separado, y luego los uní con punto bajo (alternado por una cadena).  Para el borde utilicé el punto mosaico (arriba encontrarán una gráfica del motif).

Last year I made this “Noah’s Ark” blanket, and I completely forgot to share it here in the blog…

El año pasado hice esta manta del Arca de Noé, y se me olvidó compartirla en el blog… 

The idea for this one came from the one I made years ago (Noah’s Ark blanket # 1).  For the first one I used the “waves stitch” for the water.  For this second one, I made all the background with granny squares.  I think both have their own charm.  As for the ark and animals, all were made free-form.

La idea vino de otra que hice hace varios años (Manta del Arca de Noé #1).  En la primera usé la puntada de ondas para el agua; en ésta hice todo el fondo con cuadritos de la abuelita.  Creo que cada una tiene su propio encanto.  Y en cuanto al arca y los animales, todos están hechos en forma libre (sin patrón).
